1. General information
The internship subject, as its name suggests, is designed to apply and put into practice the knowledge, competencies and skills acquired and developed in the master's degree as a whole.
This subject is intended to enable students to successfully face daily work situations in each of the entities where public and social policies are developed. These approaches and objectives are aligned with all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030, so that the acquisition of the learning results of the subject provides training and competence to contribute to some extent to their achievement, depending on the corresponding area of specialization where the student will perform their internship.
2. Learning results
During the internship the student must apply the skills developed in all the subjects taken in the master's degree and must be able to:
-Contrast and understand the process of public policy implementation through specific cases
-Analyse the social, political and economic implications involved in the definition and satisfaction of social needs and demands
-Apply the knowledge acquired on public policy evaluation.
The student, in order to pass this subject, must demonstrate the following results:
- Meet the objectives set in each internship field and be able to respond to the requirements set in each institution and receiving entity
-Efficiently perform the tasks of the selected internship position
-Work in a team and in coordination with their internship supervisor at the host entity.
3. Syllabus
The Master's program encourages the active participation of students in their training. Therefore, an internship period is included in a public administration agency (local, provincial, regional or state level), in a social initiative institution or in a non-governmental organization, under the direction and monitoring of a tutor responsible for the receiving centre and the coordinator of the master’s program. The internship includes and is completed with the completion of a master final project.
At the beginning of the second four-month period, the dates of each of the internships offered in collaboration with the institutions and entities will be set at the master's coordination and evaluation session. Based on the experience acquired in previous years, a flexible internship calendar has been designed, adapted to the demands and needs of both the students of the master's program and the entities and institutions included in the internship offer.
For this purpose, at the beginning of the academic year, during the presentation session, the previous years’ experience is described and the possible fields of practice are shown, depending on the response that the entities confirm to us. From February onwards, places will be allocated during the second four-month period of the master's program.
However, those students who are working in public institutions or non-governmental social initiative organizations and have been working for a period of more than one year, may request the validation of this subject for their professional experience, which must be accredited and argued in a timely manner.
4. Academic activities
The external internships are intended to show how the general objective of the master has been fulfilled, that the student has been trained to understand, propose and participate in the processes of public space, understood as the responsibility of all citizens. And this will be reflected by being able to analyse the different dimensions of public and social policies from a multidisciplinary and systemic perspective, both at a theoretical and applied level. On another level, they will also be able to design responses and management models for emerging challenges in the public space, in a plural and complex society, through public and social policy proposals. And finally, they will be able to evaluate the praxis of public and social policies from a multidisciplinary and systemic perspective.
5. Assessment system
The activities carried out during the internship period will be reflected in a report for which, as a suggestion, the following script is proposed:
1. Introduction: justification of the approach to be developed, objectives to be pursued, methodology and procedure to be followed, plan and structure of the report
2. Development of the work (indicating in the title what is most appropriate): This heading can be subdivided into as many sections as necessary. For example: Presentation of the core elements of the entity. [if applicable] Historical framework... (period of formation, sector, major milestones, crises and reorganizations, growth and changes?) Elements of the context, social, political, economic, etc., that allow to understand the investigated subject. [If applicable] The contents of the internship period.... The results obtained.
3. Conclusions.
4. Bibliography cited in the text. The length of the report shall not exceed twenty pages -including notes and bibliographical references-, (approx. 2100 characters per page).
Concreteness, conciseness and clarity will be valued. The evaluation criteria will be: logical argumentation of the contents, mastery of the subject matter, grounds for personal position, rational criticism based on data. A correct written expression will be required, taking care of the clarity of the exposition and spelling. If this last aspect is not taken care of, it cannot be passed. Likewise, any copying from other sources that are not properly cited will be considered plagiarism, therefore, “fail”. The final grade will be given by the tutor of the internship, who will take into account the evaluation made, in each case, from the supervision of the internship in the receiving entities and institutions.
